Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato

Students in First through Fourth Grades will practice reading and writing skills as well as following directions and speaking skills through an interactive videoconferencing project.

Two classrooms will be paired up for each session.  Before the videoconference session, each class will read the story Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola.  The class will use the potato template suggested on the wiki (http://elearningconnect.pbworks.com/Jamie-O'Rourke-and-the-Big-Potato ) to create a potato man or woman.  The class will then write a description of their potato man or woman and send the description to their partner class via email.  Each class will recreate the potato man or woman based only the written description.  The classes will then connect via a videoconference to compare their recreated potato men or women with the original one sharing similarities, differences and how the descriptions were written and interpreted.

  • Create a potato man or woman using the file with the parts and potato outline *** You only need to use the potato outline - you can add your own accessories!***
    •      Use this file (PDF) if you want to cut out parts and have students glue on
    •      Use this file (Word 2007) if you would like to create the man on the computer by cutting and pasting parts
  • Write directions for another group to create a replica of your potato man or woman
  • Send your directions to your partner so the other class can create your potato man or woman before your videoconference.

Connect through videoconferencing with another class

  • 5 min - introduce yourselves
  • 5 min - share favorite part of the story
  • 10 min - each group gives directions
  • 15 min - each group will share their potato man/woman
    • look for similiarities
    • look for differences
  • 5 min -  question and answer

Here are some additional activities that you might want to do with your students:

  • Print with potatoes
  • Plant a potato
  • Try some different potato recipes
  • Make a potato graph about how the students like to eat potatoes ( mashed, fries, baked, etc.)
  • Discuss folktales and look at some other examples of folktales
